Causes of Mental Health Issues: A Multifactorial Analysis

September 23, 20243 min read

Dear life traveler,

I hope this finds you well.  If we are to be real for a moment, life is tough.  There is not a single person in this world who will escape the challenges of coping with a mental health struggle at least once in their life tough.  As such, there are many causes of mental health issues.

Mental health issues are complex conditions that affect millions of people worldwide.  No matter whether we are struggling with sadness for short periods of time or we are diagnosed by a mental health practitioner with a mental disorder, what remains true for all of us who deal with a mental health issue at least once is our lives, is the multifaceted nature of mental health conditions.

Mental health problems typically result from a complex interplay of multiple factors rather than a single cause. Research indicates that a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors contribute to the development of mental health issues (World Health Organization, 2022).

causes of mental health issues

Adverse childhood experiences, including abuse, trauma, or neglect, can have long-lasting effects on an individual's mental well-being. These experiences can alter brain development and increase the risk of developing mental health problems later in life (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021).

Additionally, social isolation, loneliness, discrimination, and socioeconomic disadvantages can significantly impact mental health. Experiencing stigma, racism, or chronic stress related to poverty or unemployment can contribute to the onset of mental health issues (Marmot, 2015).

Unfortunately, some of us are pre-disposed to mental health issues because of genetics and brain chemistry. While no specific genes have been definitively linked to mental health problems, research suggests that some conditions may have a genetic component (National Institute of Mental Health, 2023).

Another contributing factor of mental health issues are chronic illnesses, disabilities, or neurological conditions can affect mood, behavior, and overall mental well-being. The complex relationship between physical and mental health underscores the importance of holistic healthcare approaches (Prince et al., 2007).

Unfortunately, some of us cope with life and mental health challenges using substances like illicit drugs and alcohol.  Sadly, addiction can both contribute to and result from mental health issues. Therefore, when addiction and mental health challenges occur at the same time, there is a need for integrated treatment approaches (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2022).

Events such as military combat, serious accidents, violent crimes, or natural disasters can lead to conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (American Psychiatric Association, 2023).

Exposure to environmental toxins and living in areas with high crime rates or limited access to green spaces can contribute to stress and anxiety, impacting mental health (Hoisington et al., 2019)

Job stress, long working hours, lack of work-life balance, and unemployment can all contribute to mental health issues (World Health Organization, 2022).

Significant life changes and events can trigger mental health problems in vulnerable individuals. The ability to cope with these transitions often depends on an individual's resilience and support systems (Holmes & Rahe, 1967).

I’m confident that you have experienced one or more of these issues within your life.  Therefore, if you find yourself experiencing mental health challenges, don’t be alarmed and know that you are not alone.
